Stamped vs. Regular Concrete Patio: Which Is Right for North Texas?

December 1, 20246 min read

When McKinney homeowners plan a new patio, the first decision is usually between regular (broom-finish) concrete and stamped concrete. Both are excellent choices for North Texas outdoor living, but they serve different purposes and come at different price points. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

Regular broom-finish concrete is exactly what it sounds like: a smooth, clean slab with a lightly textured surface created by dragging a broom across the wet concrete. It's the most affordable concrete patio option, typically running 30 to 40 percent less than stamped concrete. The finish is clean, professional, and slip-resistant — and for homeowners who prefer a simple, low-maintenance outdoor space, it's often the best choice.

Stamped concrete uses patterns and color hardeners to mimic the look of natural stone, slate, brick, wood planks, or other materials. The concrete is poured the same way as a regular slab, but while it's still workable, large rubber stamps are pressed into the surface to create the texture and pattern. Color is added through integral color (mixed into the concrete), color hardener (broadcast onto the surface), and release agent (which creates the contrast between the pattern lines).

In terms of durability, both options perform equally well in McKinney's climate when properly installed and sealed. The concrete underneath is the same — it's only the surface treatment that differs. Both require sealing every 2 to 3 years to maintain their appearance and protect against UV and moisture.

The cost difference is real but not dramatic. For a typical 300-square-foot patio in McKinney, regular concrete might cost between $2,400 and $3,600, while stamped concrete for the same area typically runs $3,600 to $5,400. The premium pays for the stamps, the color materials, and the additional labor time required for the stamping process.

Maintenance is slightly different. Regular concrete is easier to pressure-wash and reseal because the surface is flat. Stamped concrete requires more care during cleaning — high-pressure washing at too close a range can damage the color release in the joint lines. Both need resealing, but stamped concrete may need it more frequently if it gets heavy foot traffic that wears down the sealer in the textured areas.

For McKinney homeowners in communities like Stonebridge Ranch, Craig Ranch, and Tucker Hill, where curb appeal and outdoor living are priorities, stamped concrete is the more popular choice — it adds visual interest and can complement the home's architecture. For utility patios, side-yard slabs, or homeowners who prefer simplicity, regular broom-finish concrete delivers the same structural performance at a lower cost.
